Irene Russo

Italian concert pianist Irene Russo (°1974) studied with Lazar Berman at the Accademia Internazionale Incontri col Maestro in Imola and Alicia the Larrocha in Barcelona. Afterwards she followed masterclasses with A. Ciccolini, C. Rosen, A. Lonquich.

In 2000 she became the winner of the Clara Schumann International Piano Competition in Düsseldorf. She is also prize winner of the ARD international Piano Competition 2002 in Munich and of the Martha Argerich international Piano Competition 2003 at Buenos Aires. In 2008, she received the Dorothy MacKenzie International Piano Award in New York.

Her international career started in 1993, in Sydney. She has performed in important concert venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Bozar in Brussels, Konzerthaus in Berlin, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, Tonhalle in Düsseldorf, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Steinway Hall in New York, deGasteig in Munich, Teatro Comunale in Bologna.

Irene Russo has been invited to prestigious festivals including: La Roque d’Anthéron, Festival Van Vlaanderen, Schloss-Elmau, Robert Schumann Festival, Festival International de Marseille, Heidelberg Frühling Festival, Musica Viva, Eclat Neue Musik Festival Stuttgart.

Guest soloist with prominent orchestras like: deFilharmonie, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Orchestra Sinfonica del Teatro San Carlo, Münchener Kammerorchester, Craiova Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra da camera di Mantova, Kiev National Symphony Orchestra, Houston OrchestraX, Brandenburgische Staatsorchester Frankfurt.

Highlights of season 2010/2011 include engagements with l’Orchestre National of the Pays de la Loire (Prokofiev 3rd), a production in the Flemish Opera with the Royal Ballet of Flanders and English choreographer David Dawson, followed by concerts in Korea, Austria, Italy and Germany.

In the previous seasons Irene Russo has collaborated conductors such as U. Benedetti Michelangeli, S. Mälkki, J. Axelrod, D. Stern, M. Andreae, A. Liebreich, M. Damev, O. Balan, F. Mastrangelo, M. Tilkin.

In seasons 2005/2006 and 2007/2008 she was guest soloist with the Klassische Philharmonie conducted by H. Beissel, performing both Brahms 1st and 2nd piano concertos in the most important German concert halls such as: Beethovenhalle Bonn, Musikhalle Hamburg, dieGlocke Bremen, Meistersingerhalle Nürnberg, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Herkulessaal Munich.

Her discography includes CD’s for Brilliant Classics, Edipan, Oehms Classics and DVD for WERGO. Irene Russo has recorded for the Italian television RAI, Radio Klara, Radio 4 Holland, France Musique, ARD, Bayerischer Rundfunk, WDR, ZDF, SWR, Radio Vaticana, Radio CBC Canada, NDR and German television channel Alpha.

A passionate chamber musician, she has collaborated with several soloists and ensembles: I Solisti del Vento, Jörg Widmann, Valerie Guillorit, Gabriele Cassone, Frank Reinecke, David Adorjan, Mike Schmid, Carlos Galvez-Taronchez, Carolin Widmann.

Dedicated teacher, since 2008 Irene Russo holds a professorship at the Royal Music Conservatory of Antwerp and she’s also on faculty at the Music Conservatoire of Castelfranco Veneto (Venice).

She gives regularly masterclasses in prestigious music academies like: Haute Ecole de Musique in Genève, Utrecht University and Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen.
